Cadiz Design Studio Purchases Property in Oregon for a Case Study in Sustainable Homes

Cadiz Design Studio today announced that they are planning and developing a property in Hood River, Oregon as a case study for well-designed, affordable and sustainable homes.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA, January 21, 2009 /Architecture PR News/ -- Cadiz Design Studio today announced that they are planning and developing a property in Hood River, Oregon as a case study for well-designed, affordable and sustainable homes.

The property was purchased as an operational lavender farm with a 400 square foot cabin surrounded by adjacent orchards. The original farm will be kept intact and future plans include expanded organic lavender fields, organic fruit and vegetable gardens, and a two-story, single family residence. The future residence will be 2,000 square feet and construction costs are estimated at $250,000. Estimated date of completion is November 2009.

Development of the home will adhere to U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) home certification standards and Built Green certification standards. A few examples of the many sustainable building methodologies that will be incorporated are: (1) the use of alternative energy sources, (2) Energy Star appliances, (3) sustainable and environmentally friendly building and design materials, (4) passive heating and cooling systems,(5) rainwater harvesting, and (6) the use of grey-water for irrigation. These elements, along with others, will make the home carbon neutral by utilizing innovative and technologically advanced building systems. One exceptional feature is the quality of wind in the region which will make it possible to capitalize on residential wind energy generation.

The intent of the project is to create a replicable model for sustainable living that is both affordable and desirable for the general population. Once completed, the project will continue as a showcase house that can be visited and used as an on-going learning tool and laboratory. The location in Oregon was chosen for its history of organic farming, proximity to a major metropolitan area (Portland is one hour away), aesthetic geographical features (Mount Adams is visible from the home), and affordability.

Sustainable building has become an increasingly popular method of building to address environmental concerns. Cadiz Design Studio's property will showcase the accessibility of designing and building homes that are environmentally sustainable, healthy to live in, affordable, aesthetically beautiful, as well as having a low impact on natural resources. The goal is to break new ground on what it means to live, work, and prosper in sustainable communities while utilizing the latest in new technology and innovation.
