domusstudio-designed Encinitas Fire Station No. 3 Named Project of the Year by American Public Works Association
The new fire station No. 3 was built by the City of Encinitas to replace the older station on the same site.
SAN DIEGO, CA, May 28, 2010 /Architecture PR News/ -- Citing the City of Encinitas' commitment to firefighting services, superior planning and adherence to a strict budget, the American Public Works Association announced on May 14 that domusstudio architecture-designed Encinitas Fire Station No. 3 is Project of the Year.
Despite limited resources, cities continue to show their commitment to firefighting services, said the American Public Works Association, San Diego and Imperial Counties Chapter.
The new fire station No. 3 was built by the City of Encinitas to replace the older station on the same site. The project involved demolishing the existing station while continuing to house and allow 24/7 access for firefighter personnel and equipment from a temporary trailer on the site. Project planning included public participation to ensure the project design and plan met nearby residents' approval. A Web page was also created so neighbors could track the project's progress. The two-story concrete masonry structure with curving rooflines was designed by domusstudio architecture. The building was designed to meet all practical and functional needs as well fit in aesthetically with the community.
"It is our pleasure to work with the City of Encinitas and an honor for our partnership to be recognized," said Wayne Holtan, AIA, a principal at domusstudio architecture. The San Diego architecture firm is currently designing two more fire stations with the coastal California city.
Encinitas Fire Station No. 2 is in design development with the city. Reflecting the history of the regions' flower industry, domusstudio designs of the new Cardiff fire station incorporate a repetitive saw-tooth roof that mimics a row of greenhouses. The new fire station is expected to meet the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards for Silver certification, Holtan said. domusstudio architecture is working with the City of Encinitas on a redesign of downtown Encinitas Fire Station No. 1 as well.
Encinitas Fire Station No. 5, also designed by domusstudio architecture, then known as Dominy + Associates Architects, was named Best North Coast Fire Station in the San Diego Architectural Guide.
