Liability of Excessive Snow Loads
Building codes require employers to monitor excessive snow loads on their roof
OTTAWA, CANADA, May 21, 2010 /Architecture PR News/ -- Thousands of building codes have been developed in North America, however there are no codes governing snow guard products, installation procedures, and standards to protect the consumer. How do you know your snow management system will protect you from a liability nightmare?
According to The National Water Service, winter weather damage causes $3 billion to $6 billion in damages each year depending on the severity of the season. A cubic foot of snow can weigh anywhere from 7 pounds (dry) to 30 lbs (compact); rain and snow drifts can add even more weight creating potentially dangerous and costly situations. Building owners can be held liable for any property damage and personal injury resulting from excessive snow if it could have been prevented by proper maintenance.
In North America, there are no snow guard standards, whereas Europe looks at potential roof failure areas and designs custom systems to suit the particular project. According to Terry Anderson, an expert roofing consultant, European engineers use specific snow guards and layouts depending on different sheathing types and thicknesses, roof types, roof slopes, and snow loads. Snow brackets are installed according to a determined layout from eave to ridge to eliminate uneven snow build up.
SnoStop snow guards are Canadian manufactured and specifically engineered using the same "European" snow retention standards. Since 1996, SnoStop has supplied snow guards for federal, provincial, industrial, commercial and corporate projects in Canada and USA. Each system is custom designed to meet technical load calculations with a 2:1 safety factor. If your region receives a greater snowfall than normal, the SnoStop snow guard system has been designed to handle such variables. SnoStop can handle snow load conditions anywhere in North America.
Snostop systems are designed for all roof types from metal to standing seam with a penetrating or non-penetrating attachment. SnoStop leads the marketplace with engineered drawings, extended warranty, and superior strength. In addition to competitive performance, each snow guard system is coated to colour-match the roof surface for good aesthetics. SnoStop systems are cost-effective and easy to install. Given the superior strength of the system, less material is required to create maximum snow protection.
Snow guards should never be used as a quick solution to situations that can be litigious and a costly nightmare to the owner. Despite being a small component of building needs, snow guards should be taken seriously and custom solutions should be considered a necessity.
