Plymouth Based Architect, McCaren Design, Celebrates Planning Success

Local architectural practice McCaren Design is celebrating a long-awaited planning victory after being granted permission for a stunning contemporary riverside house.

PLYMOUTH, ENGLAND, June 16, 2010 /Architecture PR News/ -- The permission for a new dwelling on the banks of the Tamar at Saltash Passage, marks the culmination of a lifelong dream for McCaren Design's clients whose association with the river spans four generations.

Clients Mr James Donne, and his father Mr Colin Donne, commissioned McCaren Design Architects to create a dream home on a plot of land, which has belonged to their family for several decades. The new house will comprise of a two-storey, three-bedroom dwelling above a single-storey annexe.

Both Mr Donne senior and junior have worked on the River Tamar - as a Pilot and a Ship's Rigger respectively. After 35 years of service for the Port of Plymouth, Colin Donne (Snr) recently retired and is now looking forward to a relaxing riverside retirement. The granting of Planning Permission for their new home cements their connection to a waterway which has great significance for the Donne family.

In recognition of the ecological sensitivity of the site, the new house has been designed to make the lightest possible impact on the landscape. Slender legs support the building and permit wildlife to use their existing pathways on the riverbank. The accommodation above weaves in between the tree canopies preserving the local habitat. A crisp contemporary aesthetic responds to the inspiring riverside location, maximising views and space.

Project Architect Andrew Paterson commented: "The steeply sloping and heavily wooded site presented a tough design challenge but by working closely with our clients, the local authority tree officer and an arboriculture consultant, we have created a building which respects the integrity of the landscape without compromising on architectural style. Our perseverance in dealing with Planning and Environment Agency concerns was key to our ultimate success."

McCaren Design have a history of successfully achieving Planning Permission for new dwellings on waterside sites. Working in partnership with ecological and arboricultural experts, the practice makes every effort to ensure that the environmental impact of their proposals is minimal. Practice Director Robin McCaren commented: "our recent success record on sensitive sites demonstrates a recognition by Local Authority Planners of our rigorous design approach and the high quality of our work."

The practice is currently working on a range of challenging architectural projects including a retail conversion in Plymouth, an underground house in North Cornwall, and several other private dwellings in the South West.
