Summer Renovations Underway to Modernize 60's Era Elementary School
KAI Texas, an architectural firm headquartered in Dallas, heads renovation efforts at Irving ISD's Good Elementary.
IRVING, TX, August 21, 2011 /Architecture PR News/ -- (www.KAITexas.com) - The John R. Good Elementary School, part of the Irving Independent School District, is currently under renovation in an effort to modernize the 1960's -style campus. The $3 million project is headed by KAI Texas, who is supporting an aggressive 12-week construction schedule to enable the newly renovated school to reopen in August for the 2011-2012 school year.
The modernized campus will feature several important upgrades, including a new kitchen designed to support the district's new food services concept geared toward providing more nutritious meals to students, a revamping of the main entry configuration to provide more secure access control, and a replacement of rooftop heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment.
Other work includes cosmetic upgrades, such as the installation of new tile and carpet within all classrooms, offices, and corridors, the replacement of all corridor ceiling tiles, installation of a new sports flooring system in the two gymnasiums that features a specialized rubber floor consistent with district standards, and the addition of a canopy to enhance the front entry.
The school's site is being further upgraded with revised parking and bus loading facilities using additional property acquired by the District, as well as new landscaping throughout the campus.
The project design was approved by the Irving School Board in early 2011 and the renovations began June 2011.
Distinguished as a Recognized Campus by the Texas Education Agency, the John R. Good Elementary School, named for its benefactor John Roland Good, has been part of Irving since 1959. In 2001, the United Stated Department of Education designated Good Elementary as a National Blue Ribbon School. Good was also one of 12 schools in the U.S. and the only school in Texas to receive special recognition in technology in 2001.
Irving ISD has grown from a single-building wooden schoolhouse to encompass 48.5 square miles within the City of Irving. The District's location in the heart of the Dallas/Fort Worth area and just to the east of DFW International Airport provides Irving ISD the benefit of resources from the entire metroplex, as well as provides a convenient partner in education for major corporations.
